Training network for exploring microalgae diversity for the development of novel antiviral compounds – ALGAENET4AV PROJECT
The AlgaeNet4AV project, funded by the European Union through the H2020 program, aims to characterize and exploit the biodiversity of microalgae to develop bioactive cosmetics with antiviral properties, particularly targeting pandemic strains of influenza and coronavirus. The project seeks to create non-pharmaceutical products that help prevent the spread of viruses, thereby reducing the risk and speed of transmission during pandemic outbreaks.
The main focus of the project is to investigate bioactive compounds such as lectins and polyphenols from microalgae, which have shown potent antiviral properties but have not yet been commercially exploited. Additionally, the project will work on developing more efficient microalgae cultivation systems, optimizing both the cultivation conditions and the production processes to increase the yield of desired compounds.
Native strains such as Chlorella vulgaris and Nannochloropsis oceanica will be used, known for their rapid growth and production of proteins and secondary metabolites. These strains have high potential for use in industries such as food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, and the project aims to improve existing technologies and methodologies to reduce production costs, fully exploiting their potential.

BRYOMOLECULES PROJECT
Bionos Biotech is part of the BRYOMOLECULES project, a research initiative funded under the European Union’s Horizon Europe Program. This project aims to conduct the first large-scale, systematic search for bioactive compounds from European bryophyte species (mosses and liverworts).
The project seeks to overcome the challenges associated with the slow natural growth and the difficulty of large-scale extraction of these organisms. To achieve this, sterile axenic cultures are being established, and the biosynthetic pathways of bryophyte-derived compounds are being analyzed, contributing to the conservation of their biodiversity.
BRYOMOLECULES also focuses on sustainability and bioeconomy, developing biotechnological production methods to obtain these compounds without relying on wild harvesting, thereby minimizing environmental impact. Additionally, the project will contribute to the development of new eco-friendly products through research and collaboration.
Bionos Biotech brings its expertise in bioassays and efficacy evaluation to analyze the potential applications of these compounds in industrial sectors, particularly in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. This participation reinforces the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, aligning with the principles of the European Green Deal and the promotion of a circular bioeconomy in Europe.
